Eight boats launched from Kingston on a gray March morning. Three kayaks (including one tandem) and five rowboats, all crewed by teams who have raced and/or are lining up for the Seventy48. We headed north up the east side of the Kitsap Peninsula, stopped at Hansville, and rounded Twin Spits before the group continued on to Port Gamble. I paddled back home down the west side of the Hood Canal instead. The conditions were everything you’d want in a training run: headwinds and chop early, then the current swung in our favor for a calmer stretch toward the end. Waves broke over bows and blisters were earned.
